Coober Pedy……..aboriginal term for….. White man in hole !
Coober Pedy is a town in the Australian desert that has built up over the last 100 due to the discovery of Opals in the area.
Here is our camper beside our “en-suite” ……

Since I was 18 i have wanted to Fossick for opals………today my dream came true….HOWEVER it wasn’t me that found any…..
It was DAVE !

We went on a tour organised by our campsite.
Some of this town is hidden underground, some in old mines and some are constructed mainly to get away from the heat which can be around 45C in mid summer, it remains a cool 23C underground all year around.

The little white door in the hillock…..was the mayors house, and then later became the bank !
These are a space ship and water” maker”, left from one of the many si-fi films made here.
This was the police lock up !! a tin shed, no windows in that heat !

Then George took us over a mining field….those shafts can go down 30m….
We then visited an orphanage for Kangaroos…me feeding little joey WASABI peanuts….apparently close to there normal spicy roots….
And then it RAINED….in Coober Pedy……..
