Darwin 5th May 2018

We picked up this camper 13th April and I’ve just realised I haven’t put a picture of our little abode until it’s nearly time to leave her.

Picture is towards the back followed by towards the front, not a lot of room for two clumsy people !

We went into Darwin town and caught a BIG BUS tour, all day hop on hop off…… The commentary was amusing with the announcer putting in his own twist on some of the sites.

We hopped off in the area recommended by the driver for the most choice of restaurants

We chose Mexican…it was of course delicious Surprised smile)

We have no idea what this was, but he looked very forlorn !

This was a government building which the locals call the wedding cake, as you have fruit , nuts and alcohol all mixed together…..according to our cheery commentary!

This was another public building, which he said had escaped any wedding cake jokes…..

not quite sure if this is the right picture, but Cyclone Tracy hit Darwin and completely devastated the town on the night of 24th December 1974, these older houses only 4 of them all survived. Since 1974 houses have been built to withstand up to category 4 , but recently that’s been upped to 5.

We started and finished our trip on the BIG BUS outside the museum (free parking!) When we got back the driver got off the bus with us and told us all about the exhibit of the Cyclone Tracy, don’t miss the sound box he said…In the Museum, which we spent a long time in, the exhibition of Cyclone Tracy was stunning, photos and mock up of devastated houses, with things painted on the walls like WE STILL LIVE HERE !

In the sound room it was completely dark, the noise of wind and tin being scraped along the ground (from the rooves )  was horrific !

The insides of rooms were shown before, with the Dansette  old tvs and mock leather furniture. The sounds of the 70’s blaring from speakers…it was Christmas Day.
