Waking up in Guilderton was a bit of a shock, after Darwin….it was COLD !!

The water in Guilderton Estuary is brown, it is coloured by tannin from the trees further upstream.

If you look behind us you will see that there is a sand bar completely blocking the exit of the estuary, it is like this for most of the year and the river water just seeps through the sand.

When it rains heavily during the winter the river breaks through the sandbar and flows normally, when the flood water subsides the sea pushes the sand back into the estuary recreating the sandbar.DSCN3064DSCN3065

The rock at the sides of the estuary is petrified sand dunes and you can see how the weather has eroded it into interesting shapes.

Here  you can see the sandbar and the difference in colours between the estuary and the ocean.
